Kaine Meets With Honduran Jesuit Priest Father Melo Moreno To Discuss Important Role Of Civil Society And Non-Governmental Organizations In Honduras
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Senator Kaine, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with Father Ismael “Melo” Moreno, a Honduran Jesuit and well-known human rights activist.
Kaine and Father Melo discussed the evolution of the Jesuit role in Honduras, where Kaine worked with Jesuit missionaries in 1980 – 1981. Father Melo, who directs two Jesuit ministries: Radio Progreso and E.R.I.C. (The Team for Reflection, Research and Communication), highlighted the important role of the media, civil society, and other non-governmental organizations in countering deteriorating security and economic conditions in Honduras, like those driving migration.
During the visit, Kaine described his time in Honduras as the most important year of his life.
“I think of El Progreso everyday,” Kaine said. “The people, aside from my family, are the most important in shaping who I am today.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ayer, el Senador Tim Kaine, miembro del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores, se reunió con el padre Ismael "Melo" Moreno, un jesuita hondureño y conocido defensor de los derechos humanos.
El Senador Kaine y Padre Melo hablaron sobre la evolución del papel de los jesuitas en Honduras, donde el Senador trabajó con misioneros jesuitas en 1980-1981. El padre Melo,quien dirige dos ministerios jesuitas: Radio Progreso y ERIC (Equipo de Reflexión, Investigación y Comunicación), destacó el importante papel de los medios de comunicación, la sociedad civil y otras organizaciones no gubernamentales en la lucha contra el deterioro de la seguridad y las condiciones económicas en Honduras, las cual están causando la migración hacia Estados Unidos.
Durante la visita, Kaine describió su tiempo en Honduras como el año más importante de su vida.
“Pienso en El Progreso todos los días,” dijo Kaine. "La gente, aparte de mi familia, son los más importantes en la formación de quien soy hoy en día."
