‘I’m disappointed’: Sen. Kaine reflects on SCOTUS ruling limiting Voting Rights Act

"In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against a Louisiana congressional map that included two predominantly black districts in compliance with the Voting Rights Act.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said this decision is part of a multi-decade effort to dismantle the Voting Rights Act. He said the law, which has been recertified by Congress several times, ensured every American had the same opportunity to have their voice heard.

'I’m disappointed,' Kaine said. 'It’s the second major ruling that the Supreme Court has made during the time I’ve been in Congress that dramatically cut back the Voting Rights Act, essentially making it extremely difficult for anyone to ever challenge a district map on the grounds that it was motivated by race and less.'

Previously, Kaine has discussed the need to end partisan gerrymandering once and for all. He said this ruling makes that need even greater to ensure everyone has access to the same voting power."
