Kaine introduces resolution to avoid potential U.S. involvement in Iran

As tensions escalate between Iran and Israel, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine is working to ensure the United States isn’t drawn into another war without congressional approval.

The Virginia Democrat has introduced a War Powers Resolution aimed at preventing the president from unilaterally launching military action against Iran. Under the resolution, Congress would be required to debate and vote before the U.S. could enter the conflict.

“We have about 40,000 troops in the region. And Iran has made plain — if the U.S. joins Israel’s war against them, then U.S. troops will be a target,” Kaine said. “And frankly, you wouldn’t expect them to say otherwise. That’s just one reason we should stay out of a war with Iran.”

Kaine noted he believes any American involvement would come out of diplomatic pressure, rather than necessity.

“The news is filled with stories about Israel trying to encourage the U.S. to take part in a bombing campaign against Iranian nuclear facilities,” he said. “That’s exactly the kind of offensive action that — from the founding of our nation — has always required congressional approval.”

Kaine emphasized that a defensive response to an attack on U.S. troops would not require a congressional vote, but engaging in a broader conflict would.
