Sen. Kaine celebrates downtown YMCA winning $1.4M in support

"U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., toured the downtown YMCA of Central Virginia on Wednesday to celebrate the location's receipt of more than $1.4 million in federal funding for accessibility improvements.

The YMCA is raising money for a major renovation of the downtown location, which will be renamed the Schewel-Clark Family YMCA when it is completed. The current downtown facility, on Church Street, was built in 1956.

The YMCA was awarded $1,423,000 through a Congressionally Designated Spending (CDS) request approved as part of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill for fiscal year 2026. The nonprofit submitted the request through the offices of Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va."
