Kaine, Paul, Schumer & Schiff Announce Intent to File War Powers Resolution in Event of Venezuela Strike

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Rand Paul (R-KY), Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), and U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) released the following joint statement regarding the Trump Administration’s interest in striking Venezuela:

“The Trump Administration seems increasingly intent on launching strikes within Venezuela without the congressional authorization the Constitution requires. Unauthorized military action against Venezuela would be a colossal and costly mistake that needlessly risks the lives of our servicemembers. We share the concerns of the American people who have made it abundantly clear that they don’t want more forever wars—especially ones decided in secret that will drive displacement and migration in our hemisphere. Should a strike occur, we will call up a War Powers Resolution to force a debate and vote in Congress that would block the use of U.S. forces in hostilities against or within Venezuela.
