Kaine Statement on Fifth Anniversary of Jan. 6 Capitol Attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a former civil rights attorney, released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol instigated by President Donald Trump:

“Five years ago today, Donald Trump incited thousands of his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol and try to block the peaceful transfer of power. The resulting violent insurrection led to the tragic deaths of five law enforcement officers from Virginia. My heart is with their loved ones on this sad anniversary. Trump has spent the intervening time trying to rewrite history, and the very day he was sworn in for a second term in office last year, he pardoned or commuted the prison sentences of more than 1,500 of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists – including those convicted of crimes like seditious conspiracy, assaulting law enforcement, and using a deadly weapon.

These are the actions of a weak, small person. Trump’s actions disrespect the law enforcement officers who bravely defended the Capitol from the violent mob. And they are blasphemous to the democracy that our forefathers fought a revolution to ordain and establish.”
