Kaine Statement on National Park Service’s Designation of Bedford as American World War II Heritage City

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement regarding the National Park Service’s designation of Bedford as an American World War II Heritage City. Kaine sent a letter in support of this designation in August 2023.

Bedford demonstrated incredible resilience during World War II and is home to the National D-Day Memorial, which honors nineteen soldiers—known as the Bedford Boys—who fearlessly massed the shores of Normandy in 1944. I was glad to support Bedford’s designation as an American World War II Heritage City to ensure this community’s invaluable contributions to WWII are recognized for generations to come.”

The American World War II Heritage City Program was created in 2019 and allows one designation per U.S. state or territory. Bedford was among 11 communities across the country that received designations in 2023.
