Kaine Statement On Puerto Rico Debt Crisis
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement after the Senate passed legislation addressing the Puerto Rican debt crisis:
“The 3.5 million people who call Puerto Rico home are American citizens, and they deserve better,” Kaine said. “For years, Puerto Ricans have faced uncertainty about their jobs and livelihoods due to an unsustainable debt situation. This bill is far from perfect, but it is necessary. On Friday Puerto Rico would have faced a default on the debt, which would have pushed the island into uncharted waters and put into jeopardy the viability of essential public services like law enforcement, first responders, and health care workers. Due to the consequences of inaction, I voted in favor of this legislation. I do wish the Senate could have considered amendments to better protect the residents of Puerto Rico’s interests and to give them a stronger voice in the process. This bill is the first step in a long journey toward helping Puerto Rico and I look forward to continuing to engage on this issue.”

DECLARACIONES DE KAINE SOBRE EL VOTO SOBRE LA CRISIS FINANCIERA DE PUERTO RICO
WASHINGTON, D.C. – El Senador Tim Kaine hizo las siguientes declaraciones después que el Senado aprobó legislación sobre la crisis financiera de Puerto Rico:
“Los 3,5 millones de habitantes de Puerto Rico son ciudadanos estadounidenses y merecen mejor,” dijo Kaine. “Durante muchos años, puertorriqueños han enfrentado incertidumbre sobre sus empleos y sus vidas cotidianas debido a la situación financiera insostenible. Este proyecto de ley no es perfecto pero es necesario. El viernes, Puerto Rico hubiera enfrentado un pago incumplible, lo cual no se ha antes visto y pondría en riesgo la viabilidad como nunca antes de los servicios públicos esenciales como cuerpos policiales, primeros auxilios y proveedores de cuidado médico. Debido a las consecuencias de no actuar, voté a favor de esta legislación. Quisiera que el Senado hubiera considerado enmiendas para mejor proteger los intereses de los puertorriqueños y que les hubieran dado mayor voz en el proceso. Este proyecto de ley es el primer paso en un largo camino para ayudar a Puerto Rico y espero seguir contribuyendo al debate.”
