Kaine Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Gutting Temporary Protected Status

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a former civil rights attorney, released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling in Mullin v. Doe and Trump v. Miot that will allow the Trump-Vance Administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than a million people living and working in the United States:

“Nearly 30,000 TPS holders live, work, attend school, worship, run businesses, and pay taxes in Virginia. These Virginians received TPS because they faced armed conflict or natural disasters in their home countries, making it impossible for them to return safely. Many have since become integral parts of their communities and the economy, and many have U.S. citizen children and spouses. The same is true for the million-plus TPS holders across the country. Yet the Supreme Court is letting the Trump-Vance Administration terminate their TPS status with no court review, even when the Administration may have brazenly violated the law in doing so.”

Kaine, along with 27 of his Senate Democratic colleagues, signed on to an amicus curiae brief to the Supreme Court in Mullin v. Doe and Trump v. Miot that explained congressional intent on when courts should review an Administration’s termination of TPS.
