Kaine Statement on Trump’s Threat of Illegal War with Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, released the following statement regarding reporting that President Donald Trump is considering imminent military action in Iran:

“Trump is bumbling his way toward war with Iran in a feeble attempt to accomplish what had already been done by a diplomatic deal that was effectively curbing Iran’s nuclear program—until Trump tore it up, over the objections of his then-Secretaries of Defense and State.

“Virginia families have already suffered enough because of wrongheaded forever wars in the Middle East. Virginians don’t want a President ordering our troops to take action—against foreign countries or against American cities—without congressional debate and vote.

“I have filed a bipartisan resolution to block this war against Iran unless Congress votes to approve it. If some of my colleagues support war, then they should have the guts to vote for the war, and to be held accountable by their constituents, rather than hiding under their desks. The President is dragging us further and further into overseas quagmires while everyday Americans are weighed down by rising costs, disappearing jobs, and sputtering growth.”
