Kaine Statement On Voting Against Continuing Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, voted against proceeding to a continuing resolution to extend government funding through December 11:

“The funding resolution negotiated by Senate Appropriations leaders has much good substance that would, in normal times, earn my vote. But, in the midst of an illegal war killing and injuring our troops and sticking American families with unnecessary costs, I am not yet able to support proceeding to this proposal. I hope that the President will follow the law and end this foolish war before the House returns to take up the measure in September. Once that occurs, passage of this resolution will be the right thing to do.”

Last week, Kaine spoke on the Senate Floor to express his strong opposition to President Trump’s three illegal wars in Iran, Venezuela, and the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific Ocean. In the speech, he called for congressional action to end these unauthorized military operations. Kaine previously led the successful passage of a War Powers Resolution to end the Iran war.
