Kaine Statement on Meeting with Afghanistan President Karzai

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who will serve on the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, released the following statement after joining a bipartisan group of senators for a meeting with President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan today.

“Today’s meeting with President Karzai offered an opportunity to discuss important issues facing our two countries,” said Senator Kaine. “I was most interested in our discussion of plans for 2014, when the Afghan people will conduct a presidential election roughly coinciding with the end of America's combat mission. I look forward to more discussion of U.S. policy and the future of Afghanistan during the upcoming confirmation hearings for the Secretaries of State and Defense.”

In 2006, then-Governor Kaine had the opportunity to meet President Karzai while visiting Virginia National Guard troops in Kabul, Afghanistan.
